At the very center and glory of Canton is the beautiful Greek Revival Courthouse and the Courthouse Square. Members of the local Masonic Order laid the cornerstone to the Courthouse in July 1855. The Courthouse has — in its rich history — served as a gathering place to welcome the railroad, send soldiers off to war, as a Court of Justice and the Seat of county offices, a polling place, an early library, a theater, and a hospital during the yellow fever epidemic. During the Holidays the courthouse and square are adorned with thousands of sparkling lights to create a Holiday wonderland. Over the years lights, rides, museums, characters and much more have been added to help create magic and memories for families from near and far. Little ones will be entertained by Mrs. Clause in the historic Square or they can personally deliver their wish list to Santa him- self.
