As adult children, when imagining our parents as seniors, we may not fully comprehend the extent to which their aging will affect them or how it will affect us. Indeed, if they are already seniors and still in good health and living independently we may not feel any dramatic changes or concerns. However, the time does come when effects of aging become more evident and long-term care may be needed. Do you have a parent who is showing signs of slowing down or in need of assistance? It may be time to discuss moving them in with you or possibly a senior living environment. Check out our feature this month — which focuses on the right questions to ask, the signs to look for and some great places in the River Region that may be the perfect fit when the time comes to move mom or dad. Article begins on page 44. “Living Well” highlights the stages of staying healthy and fit at any age. There’s no secret to living a long and healthy life. You can be just as fit in your 60s as you were in your 20s. All you need is a little time and a good exercise program. Find the tips on page 16. The Alabama State Council on the Arts continues to spark growth for the arts and its impact in Alabama by working with a wide range of arts organizations, individual artists, educational institutions, and communities. And, for more than 33 years the executive director, Al Head, has been forging the way. He’s recently announced his retirement and will step down at the end of the year. Find the article in “Culture” beginning on page 24. Looking for something fun to do this month? Check out “Here & There” for a great list of events in the River Region and beyond. Ballet and the Beast is back, Zoobilation is always a fun time and the Red Clay Oyster Fest in Opelika will happen on Sept. 18. And, don’t forget the Alabama National Fair, it starts earlier this year. Find these events and so many more starting on page 60. Looking for a relaxing trip? Sometimes you don’t have to travel to far to uncover a gem. Consider Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, Alabama. Pursell Farms is a gorgeous resort community on a sprawling 3,200 acres with a wedding venue, a brand-new estate-style inn, a boutique spa, fabulous restaurants and a myriad of outdoor activities including world-class golfing with breathtaking views.
