It’s a term that is heard now more than ever as patients not only survive breast cancer, but go on to live healthy lives for decades afterwards. As advances in treatment and early detection continue to surge forward, doctors can better focus on the quality of patients’ lives long after diagnosis. Surgical incisions are becoming smaller and more targeted. Side effects are more easily managed. There are more choices for breast reconstruction. And a host of local support groups are available to those who may need help with the healing process. So, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month we celebrate all women and men who have been affected by cancer. But what if you’ve been affected not once… not twice… but three times? Hearing those words once is bad enough, but three times can be devastating. Meet one local sweetheart who has faced this deadly disease multiple times and won the fight. Don’t let her infectious smile fool you… she’s a true warrior. Article on page 30. Focusing on healthy living, this issue highlights our special “Health and Wellness” section promoting local businesses dedicated to encouraging healthier lifestyles. Special section begins on page 32. Fall is a wonderful time of year — some even say it’s the best time to travel. I agree. This year, put Tennessee on your trip list. Many travelers to Chattanooga are familiar with the thriving downtown area, historical sites and unique lodging. But when looking for something slightly out of the ordinary that won’t break the bank, don’t overlook the Tennessee Valley Railroad with its themed train rides. Fun for the whole family. Find the article on page 44. Of course if you’re not traveling anytime soon, there is always something happening in the River Region. Check out “Here and There” beginning on page 52 for the listing. The Harriott II is always cruising, Zoo Boo is tons of fun and don’t forget MANE’s annual “Raise the Roof ” fundraiser. October is great for getting out, enjoying the cooler weather and participating in the plethora of events around town. And outdoor enthusiasts, fret not — cooler temperatures mean fall fertilizing should be on your list of outdoor chores this season. Find the tips on page 20. In August, we lost a dear friend and frequent contributing writer, Mary Ann Neeley. She was a tiny dynamo who loved, lived and breathed Montgomery’s history. A true historian that is deeply missed. Read her interesting (history) and story, beautifully written by Patsy Robertson (page 26).
