The heart pumps faster to get much needed blood and oxygen to the muscle tissue. Along with the increased heart rate, the arteries and vessels have to expand to allow for the increase in blood flow. When the aerobic exercise ceases, the heart rate drops back to its resting state. At the same time the heart rate decreases, the blood volume being pumped obviously decreases as well. With the arteries and vessels still in a dilated state, the blood pressure then lowers. Q. Do you see men’s health concerns change with their age? A. For sure, as far as exercise. Older men especially are very con- scious of mobility and memory. They have a strong desire and determination to be independent as long as possible. Oth- ers have already experienced a health crisis like a heart attack or stroke, or have had orthopedic issues. I see older men fighting to regain health and mobility, and I see healthy men determined to keep their health. Either way, exercise works. I’m proud to say I’ve worked with stroke victims who came to our facility in wheelchairs and walked out our doors under their own power. It’s the best part of my job. Q. What are some misconcep- tions about exercise? A. First of all, at MCA Health & Fit- ness, you don’t have to bench press 150 pounds or run 5 miles around the indoor track to experience the benefits of exercise. Consistency pays off the most. Consis- tency, pure and simple. Carve out as little as 30 minutes three times a week.
