M ERRIE M IMICS M YSTIC S OCIETY On the evening of Saturday, September 8 at the Montgomery Country Club, the Merrie Mimics Mystic Society officially opened the Montgomery Ball season with their 65th annual ball themed “You Can Call Me Zelda.” The Ladies of Merrie Mimics celebrated the 20’s and the life of Zelda Fitzgerald and the 100th anniversary of her meeting F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ball guests were greeted by 1920’s prohibition memorabilia in- cluding rum barrels, prohibition rules, Fitzgerald clothing artifacts and hand-written notes, all graciously on loan from The F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum. The ballroom was adorned with Jazz Age decorations such as feathers, white hydrangeas in long stemmed vases, French martini glasses, strands of white pearls and printed quotes from Zelda. Offset from the entrance was a step back in time featuring an ornate period sofa, antique luggage trunk and photo booth props such as feather boas and period hats. Following tradition, the ladies of Merrie Mimics wore black dresses and masks but stayed with the theme by wearing flapper style dresses, pearls and headbands. The Queen wore a gorgeous silver sequined flapper gown, accessorized with her own vintage 20’s style head piece serving as her tiara. Guests enjoyed the traditional tableau along with a performance by local ballerina, Megan Thompson. Thompson danced to the song Dance of the Hours, the same song Zelda danced to at this same venue in July 1918, in which she caught the eye of her soon to be husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald. As a token of ap- preciation, the Queen presented the board members and the hostess committee with a bottle of cham- pagne and other themed gifts and in gratitude for hosting, the membership of Merrie Mimics pre- sented the Queen with two prints on canvas of Zelda’s art- work which were also on display at the Ball. n trumpet with fellow jazz band members, Henry Pugh on keyboard and vocals and Ted Mann, Trombone. Many thanks to all of our volunteers: Andrea Screws, Margaret Peeples, Susanne Lowe, Karen Gallahar, Jodi Hatley, Kelsey Godfrey, Marianne Esco, Kellie Rhyne, board member, and Jennifer Conner, board member.
