42 AL/ Metro 360 www.almetro360.com Continuing with his medical journey, he became a patient at Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons under the care of Dr. Joe Curtis, who concurred with his physician’s diagnosis and recommended hip replacement surgery sooner rather than later. In September of 2016, his right hip was replaced. “The difference was remarkable, and I was able to pick up the pace on my activities,” said McGinty. “But I still needed the left hip done, so I had it replaced in January of 2018. I’m now back in the swing of things with no restrictions on my activities.” Remarkably, he was able to put his “new hips” to the ultimate test last July when he joined a group bike ride up Mount Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama. “I had no problem,” he said. “In fact, I scaled that little old hill faster than I had done before surgery. I’ve also found participating in my musical pursuits has become much easier. Especially the hauling, setting up and tearing down parts.” Not only has McGinty bounced back to enjoying his musical pursuits, in June and October of 2018, he took long cross-country car trips to Kansas and NewMexico with no issues. “Those would have been impossible before surgery,” he said. Both surgeries were successful along with one-on-one consulta- tions about what to expect before and after surgery. Each time upon discharge, McGinty walked out of the hospital on his own. He credits his phenomenal care to Curtis and the medical team at Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons, and he would recommend them to anyone needing hip replacement surgery. “I recognize that I was somewhat a special case because of my athletic background, good overall health and fitness, and eagerness to get back to my normal activities,” he said. “However, I think the key to my short-term recovery periods was my willingness to do the office work AND homework. It wasn’t easy, but the post- op therapy team at Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons is superb at motivating and guiding you through the process.” His advice to anyone searching for treatment is, “Southern Or- thopaedic Surgeons are experts at getting you through the first few tough therapy sessions, so you’ll actually look forward to doing the strength, flexibility and balance exercises you are going to need.” After McGinty’s surgery and commitment to physical therapy, he was able to reclaim his life back and enjoy living a pain free and active lifestyle. If you’re facing challenging orthpaedic issues, there is hope of getting on a path to recovery at Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons. Their mission is to provide mobility to their patients and overcome whatever is holding them back. And they are always diligent in raising the medical bar with highly trained physicians and surgeons. In August, they will add a new physician to their medical team, Dr. Perry Hooper, who is fel- lowshipped trained in orthpaedic sports medicine. n For more information, visit www.sos-ortho.com.
