Lo- cation, size of the student body, programs offered, cost of tuition, and the campus environment are just a few considerations for choosing the right fit. In addition, here are some important tips to make the most out of your college career: • Go to class. Attending class is the greatest determining factor of a college student’s success. To ensure you begin college off with a strong start, show up and attend classes from the first week. Additionally, classmates will become the first industry contacts you have. Graduation is only a few years away. Keeping in touch with your classmates is a good way to network. • Work hard. College is not for the faint-hearted. Graduating from college takes effort and dedication. Do the readings, learn the material and put in the work. When you graduate, you will have better skills, experiences and habits and will be better prepared for the job market. • Get to know the faculty. Be personable and make a positive impression — often instructors are asked by people within their industry for recommendations on potential candidates. Staying in touch with the instructors can benefit you as you begin your job hunt after graduation. • Volunteer. The best way to practice your craft is to volunteer. By volunteering, you are putting your industry knowledge to work while building a strong network. • Build a portfolio. College is a great place to build your portfolio of work samples. A portfolio is proof that you have the skills and experience employers are hunting for. Employers are looking for college graduates who have skills and experience.
