import ten captive born Gharials (a critically endangered Indian crocodile) from the Madras Crocodile Bank in India, while also bringing awareness to the plight of these reptiles throughout the world by aiding in conservation projects in the wild. In addition, upon the recommendation of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), the Zoo has added a new resident to its collection, a Komodo dragon (vulnerable status) named Merlin. Making his public debut on July 15, Merlin stretches four feet long and topping the scales at 6 pounds. As a full-grown adult, Merlin will measure snout to tail over 10 feet long, and hit the scales at over 200 pounds. The Montgomery Zoo is also playing a vital role in conservation efforts for endangered species like the Reticulated giraffe and Bengal tiger. Each year the Zoo hosts events to bring awareness, raise funds, and have a little fun while providing for both of these very worthwhile causes.
