Montgomery native Tammy Knight Fleming is the daughter of Jackie Knight, a retired teacher, and John Knight, Jr., a former state representative and administrator at Alabama State University. She says, “They nurtured and instilled in me values of love for family, friends and community.”

After high school, Fleming moved to Atlanta to attend Spelman College. She says it was there that she came to understand that, “home is where the heart is.” So, she followed her heart back home to Montgomery and earned a degree in political science from ASU.

Fleming’s career began working for Congressman Earl Hilliard as a legislative liaison. She moved on to jobs outside of the political arena, but returned to work in the Siegelman and Riley administrations. She then opened Knight Fleming and Associates in 2007. Fleming currently serves as the principal of the governmental affairs consulting firm. She says, “Our team works with entities that have an interest in policy and legislative action, establishing and managing relationships to help them achieve their goals.”

Fleming is serving her third term as chair of the Montgomery Airport Authority, the governing body for Montgomery Regional Airport. Along with eight other directors, she is responsible for oversight of the airport. She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a sustaining member of Junior League of Montgomery, and has also served on the Landmarks Foundation.

While in college in Atlanta, she met and married her best friend, Anthony. They have two children, and Fleming says, “My children are active in sports, and I have spent the majority of time over the years cheering them on. I travel when I can, shop here and there, and try to play a little golf along the way.”

Fleming says she tries to live by the motto “Because of them, I am.” She shares, “I have always had great expectations, but I have done nothing alone. I have always been wrapped in a village of love, protection, caring, giving and guidance, and for that I’m grateful. I only hope that one day, someone will say, “Because of Tammy, I am.”
