C ANCER W ELLNESS F OUNDATION OF C ENTRAL A LABAMA H ELPING C ANCER P ATIENTS “B EAT THE O DDS ” Photos by Emily Wise The Cancer Wellness Foundation held its 3rd annual fundraiser “Beat the Odds” Casino Night and Drawdown Event on Thursday, October 18 at the beautiful Wynlakes Country Club. Decorations and lighting were in keeping with the casino night theme and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a splash of pink lighting cascading down the walls amid a room full of feather table arrangements and even a pink lighted bar. Natalie Pirnie co- ordinated all of the beautiful décor for the evening. Guests enjoyed playing in a venue which included real casino tables with all the traditional table games such as poker, blackjack and craps. Slot machines and a roulette wheel rounded out the realistic feel of Las Vegas casino. To bring forward the reason for our event, Dr. Alex Whitley, a radiation oncologist with Central Alabama Radiology Oncology provided some insight into his work and the needs of the patients he sees each day. Board member and doctorate of nurse practice, Jennifer Conner also shared her experiences by de- scribing the needs of cancer patients in Central Alabama and spoke to how the Cancer Wellness Foundation meets the needs of our patients every day as they undergo their treatment. The highlight of the evening came with the announcement of the drawdown, and 9 lucky winners split the pot of $10,000. The evening con- cluded with the raffle drawing and winners took home a large screen TV, donated by the foundation’s board president, Tom Broughton, a Yeti cooler donated by The Locker Room and Iron Bowl tickets donated by Total Sports Travel. The Cancer Wellness Foundation’s staff, Connie Cobbs, Michelle Cely, Annemarie Deale and Executive Director, Wendy Anzalone greeted guests as they arrived. The Board of Directors served as hosts of the event. A wonderful group of volunteers assisted with the event including some students from The Montgomery Acad- emy, Jack Anzalone, Eric Doh, Drew McDaniel, Mac Main as well as Lily Anzalone and Caroline Deale. Additional student volunteers included Peyton Cely and Taylor Cassidy.
