After graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago and then achieving his M.D. at St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Avery served in the United States Army from 1990 to 2002. He served his residency in internal medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington before completing a fellowship in hematology-oncology at D.C.’s Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Avery is an associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a member of the clinical adjunct faculty of Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) as well as a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. Dr. Avery is also the recipient of an Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and two Meritorious Services Medals. He has been a partner with Alabama Oncology Hematology Associates for several years.

“I work with cancer patients on a daily basis, from diagnosis, therapy, to end of life in hospice. I celebrate when they are cancer free and provide support when a relapse occurs. Cancer patients are some of the most caring, strong, brave and loving patients I know. I am glad to have the opportunity to serve them in any way I can.”
